The firm also acts in the preparation of wills and powers of attorney. Research shows that most people intend making a will, but never get around to it. While the law gives limited protection to any spouse or registered civil partner and to any children you may have, these days few of us live in traditional family circumstances. You may, for example, wish to provide for a partner to whom you are not legally married, or indeed the children of your partner. Such individuals have no automatic rights of inheritance. Modern families have to take all these matters into account.
In addition, by making a Will, you can substantially reduce the legal costs involved in administering your estate, thereby leaving more to your loved ones and less to the government and lawyers !
You may also wish to consider granting a Power of Attorney in favour of a friend or family member. This enables financial or medical decisions to be made on your behalf in the event that one day you lose the legal capacity to conduct your own affairs. Unfortunately, none of us is immune to accidents or to the onset of dementia, and once these perils affect us, lengthy and costly court action is required for simple matters such as withdrawing money from a bank account.
Please consider spending half an hour or so making a Will and/or Power of Attorney, thereby avoiding uncertainty and expense for your loved ones after your death.
